Curator's Statement: 

      This exhibition spans the early history of portraiture in an attempt to illustrate the development of the practice. As a means of portraying an individual or group, portraiture was unrivaled in the ancient world. Viewable and interpretable by cultured noblemen and illiterate peasants alike, an effective portrait could convey the ethos of a ruler or leader more powerfully than any words.....
